Support for the idea of 'characters' as a subset of accounts (as opposed to 'subaccounts' being real accounts connected together) is a core feature, along with several other roleplay-first features including 'in character' vs 'out of character' boards, complete with revised presentation to showcase the characters, topic invites, a character timeline builder and approvable character sheets.

It was discontinued mostly due to a growing sense of perceived dissatisfaction with the roleplay scene, relating to the lack of interest of platforms beyond Jcink, much interpersonal drama in the scene that the StoryBB author would rather entirely avoid becoming part of, and a general observation that forums are dying.

Meanwhile development would loosely continue - including a full PHP port of the platform - and while it was apparently in development as late as 2006, there are no current sites run by the platform's owners.

Protendo was based on the view that the frontend theme should be able to control precisely how things should be displayed, even if the data was not necessarily available (a design trait driven originally by SMF's views on separation of concerns, that the backend should provide data to the front end only)

Much of the design that was done for Protendo was later released in conventional themes for SMF, and it is unknown how far Protendo development was taken before it was ultimately shelved.

YABB SE, or Yet Another Bulletin Board (Splinter Edition), was founded in 2001 shortly after the 1.0 release of YABB, by Jeff Lewis and Joseph Fung, as a rewrite/port of YABB to the PHP language, because Perl wasn't commonly available on hosting environments.

It was actively developed until 2003 or so, and released under the GNU GPL license.

While the YABB SE forum community website is preserved at https://www.yabbse.org/ this has not been powered by YABB SE in some years, and is now actually powered by an instance of SMF, albeit modified under permission to cite itself as YABB SE.

SuperMod
Sometime in 2002, an unofficial release of YABB SE was made, under the name SuperMod. This comprised the latest version of YABB SE, plus around 150 mods sourced from the community, as a single monster release.

It was known for being more buggy and unreliable than YABB SE, and fell behind on security patches.

ttForum
Sometime in late 2002 or early 2003, a group took the code for YABB SE (and not even the latest version), removed all of YABB SE's copyright notices and replaced all of them with their own, 'ttForum'.

Legacy
Between these two projects, the founders of YABB SE, plus a mod author from the community felt the best approach was to create a new project that held the spirit and some of the design principles of YABB SE but under a new closed license that would not permit derived works (beyond mods and themes), which would become SMF.

SMF - Simple Machines Forum - was founded in 2003 after license issues with YABB SE.

The original core development team was Jeff Lewis, Joseph Fung and "[Unknown] W. Brackets", and SMF 1.0 was released in 2004.

More information: https://www.simplemachines.org/

The name
The name was chosen to imply both the fact that it should be simple to use, but also that it was never intended to be only a forum product; the use of 'simple machines' in the plural was to indicate the intent for an ecosystem of which the forum was merely the first.

1.0 release
During the development phase, it was referred to as 'Unknown's secret project', and developed alongside security patches and support for YABB SE but all major development had stopped on YABB SE by early 2003 to make way for SMF.

It debuted in early 2004 for public consumption, featuring an upgrader/importer for YABB SE forums, plus a copy of the stock YABB SE theme (dubbed Classic), and its own new default theme, Babylon.

1.1 release
1.1 was released in autumn 2006 featuring a new default theme (internally referred to as NDT during its development) and later named Core. Both Classic and Babylon themes were shipped with 1.1.

The main development focus in 1.1 was integration support for portals (e.g. a bridge to Mambo/Joomla), though various general improvements were added.

It was around this time that Jeff, Joseph and Unknown began to transition out of the community to focus on other things in their lives.

2.0 release
Several major features were added in 2.0: support for PostgreSQL and SQLite databases, post moderation, built in warning system, paid subscriptions.

However, there was a lot of internal debate within the team especially during 2009-2010 and the project changed management as well as license; the 2.0 release was finally made in 2011 under the BSD license.

2.0 also debuted with another new theme, Curve, and Core was also shipped with it. Classic and Babylon ports for 2.0 were later made.

2.1 release
After much internal tension, 2.1 was finally released in 2022, nearly 11 years after the previous release (though the team had continued to make security and maintenance releases in that time for the 2.0 branch).

2.1 ships with a number of modern features: responsive theme by default (dubbed Curve2), likes, mentions, alerts, redesigned admin panel, post and PM drafts, a new WYSIWYG editor, better support for Unicode.

SQLite support, as well as support for admin panel backups were dropped due to a lack of reliability, and minor other options were dropped, much to the community's displeasure.

3.0 release
A 3.0 release is in the works.

Forks
Several forks were made from SMF after the license was updated.
Post acquisition
Plans were made in early 2008 or so for a new 4.0 version, but Internet Brands signalled their intent to move the development to an offshore team, leaving the Jelsoft team to 'review' the output.

This caused several departures from the team, including its then lead developer, Kier Darby, and a senior developer, Mike Sullivan, who would go on to form XenForo.

4.x era
In 2009, the 4.0 version was released, and initial uptake was limited because 4.0 was a significant overhaul compared to 3.x, such that a number of features were initially missing from the software.

During this time, Internet Brands sued XenForo citing breach of copyright and inappropriate use of intellectual property (implying that XenForo had taken some of the vB 4.0 design and materials). The lawsuit would eventually be settled in private.

5.x era
In 2012, the 5.0 version was released, and much like the 4.0 initial release, this was a significant overhaul that removed a number of features, some of which would eventually be re-added.

6.x era
In 2023, the 6.0 version was released. This appears to have been a modest development on top of the 5.7 series.

However, it was not unnoticed that the number of communities run by vBulletin was now cited as being 40,000, down from prior claims of 120,000 active installs.

* Wedge
* ElkArte
* Protendo

Early history
vBulletin was founded in 1999 or thereabouts, run by a company called Jelsoft, with a first release in 2000, which was commercial only.

By 2007, the 3.x series had become one of the de-facto solutions for web based forums, and owing to the number of forums they themselves ran using the software, Jelsoft was acquired by Internet Brands.

Arantor:

* ElkArte
* Protendo

Protendo was based on the view that the frontend theme should be able to control precisely how things should be displayed, even if the data was not necessarily available (a design trait driven originally by SMF's views on separation of concerns, that the backend should provide data to the front end only)
Protendo was based on the view that the frontend theme should be able to control precisely how things should be displayed, even if the data was not necessarily available (a design trait driven originally by SMF's views on separation of concerns, that the backend should provide data to the front end only)

Much of the design that was done for Protendo was later released in conventional themes for SMF, and it is unknown how far Protendo development was taken before it was ultimately shelved.

From 2010 to 2013 they worked to modernise SMF and add new features. Arantor left in summer 2013 citing personal tension with Nao, and would later rejoin the SMF dev team for a few months.

SMF - Simple Machines Forum - was founded in 2003 after license issues with YABB SE.

The original core development team was Jeff Lewis, Joseph Fung and "[Unknown] W. Brackets", and SMF 1.0 was released in 2004.

* Wedge
* ElkArte
* Protendo
* Eos Alpha
